Concerto no. 1 for trombone and chamber orchestra
Concerto no. 1's three movements develop in style and content. The progression of alto to tenor to bass trombone demonstrates advancements in technology. I’ve mirrored this progression through the style: I. Toccata’s Neoclassical characteristics develop into II. Aria’s blatant Impressionism, followed by a “Hindemithian” palette in III. Allegro barbaro. The three movements are further linked by an expanding motivic sequence, so that the melodic content spirals outwards during the piece.
